Rhodes is one of the most popular holiday destinations in all of Greece. On the island you can find amazing beaches, fantastic food and a lot of historical buildings. 10. Medieval City of Rhodes

Number 10, the Medieval City of Rhodes. The old town of Rhodes is one of Europe’s oldest inhabited towns. The town is extremely well preserved and forms a labyrinth of small streets where you can find amazing shops and small restaurants. There are over 200 small streets in the old town that are waiting for you to explore them.

If you ever get lost in the small streets go and ask for Sokratous Street. This is the main street leading in and out of old town. In this part of Rhodes you can find a cultural mix between Greek, Italian and Ottoman influences.

There are 11 gates that you can use to enter the town. The best one to enter is the liberty gate. Do not forget to take a lot of pictures as this town is also part of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

The old town should definitely be on your to do list if you ever visit Rhodes.

 

9. Tsambika Beach

If you are looking for a wonderful day at the beach than you should definitely check out this beach.  Tsambika Beach is one of the best rated beaches of Rhodes. 8. Palace of the grand Masters

For the number 8 we go back to the old town of Rodes. Near the old town you can find the magnificent palace of the Grand Masters. The palace used to be home to the crusaders of the knight of Saint John. In 1856 the palace was completely destroyed when a munition depot exploded near the palace. In the 1930’s the Italians rebuilded the palace for the former king of Italy. The palace would be made as a summer residence for king Victor Emmanuel and later for the dictator Mussolini. None of them have ever used it for their holidays. Within the palace you can find a display of wonderful artifacts from the Hellenistic time and the time of the knights of Saint John.  

 

7. Mandraki Harbour

Mandraki is the main harbour of Rhodes. It used to be the location of the famous Colossus of Rhodes. The Colossus of Rhodes was a giant statute that walcomed ships that entered the harbour. It used to be one of the sever wonders of the ancient world. Today, the statues of two deers named ‘’Elefos’’ and ‘’Elafina’’ stand where once stood the feet of the colossus stood . By the city walls there is the castle of Saint Nicholaos which received its title from the patron saint of the seaman. This castle operates as a lighthouse for boats. The harbour is an ideal place to find a wonderfull excursion to one of the nearby island or to enjoy the nice harbour view for a night out.

 

6. Symi Island

Just of the coast of Rhodes we can find the island of Symi. The island can easily be reached by boat from Rhodes. Several boats leave everyday with daytrips to the island. Most boats make a stop at the St. Michael Panormitis monastery in the south of the island before departing to the main village on the island. Symi is well know for the beautifull buildings in the main village. Colorful buildings await you along with very nice small shops. Symi island is absolutely worth the visit.

 

5. Seven Springs

One of Rhodes' most recognizable locations is the Seven Springs. Every year the sping draws many tourists. Seven Springs is a magical landscape, a real oasis, swamped in greenery. Water flows out of the springs all year around, which is forming a small lake. The lake remains replenished thanks to a dam. The access to the lake at seven springs is very popular with visitors and offers a unique experience. If you feel adventurous enough, you can to walk through the 186 meters long and 2.5 meters high and very narrow dark tunnel to get to the lake. If you are less adventures you can always take the path above the tunnel.

 

4. Lindos Acropolis

Not exactly the same as the famous Acropolis in Athens, but still one of the most beautiful ancient sites in Rhodes. The stories from the Lindos Acropolis go back as far as the ancient Trojan War. Above the village there is the citadel with the famous temple of Athena Lindia.  It is a natural fortification that was used by the ancient Greeks and by the Romans, Byzantines, Knights of St. John, and Ottomans later on. The temple dedicated to the goddess Athena is estimated to have been constructed during the 9th century BC. The Lindos Acropolis is absolutely as must see if you love Greek history.
